Malja hoping to replicate previous Spa success

Scenically nestled in Belgium’s Ardennes forest, Spa-Francorchamps has been happy hunting grounds for Gustav Malja. After claiming his first GP2 podium at the venue in 2016, the Swede finished fourth in the same category (albeit rebranded as Formula 2) last season, adding to earlier successes in Formula Renault. This weekend, Malja is back at Spa for round seven of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, once again ready to tackle the mountains and valleys of Wallonia.

”Racing at Spa always brings a smile to my face. It’s one of my favourite tracks, I’ve gone well there in the past, and I really enjoy driving it. It’s where I made my GP2 debut in 2015, it’s where I had my first GP2 podium in 2016, and also last year it was one of my most competitive weekends.

”We tested at Spa a month ago, and it’s fair to say it’s a completely different track in the Porsche. Eau Rouge is now actually a corner! It used to be easy flat in single-seaters, very fast but basically a straight, and it’s a much bigger challenge now. Hopefully, I can keep up the good tradition of performing well at Spa and take away a strong result this weekend.”
